About Our Church

We are a congregation of Indian expatriates from the state of Kerala. Most of us live in and around Leeds. We meet at least twice a month at St. James's Hospital Chapel, on second and fourth Sundays of each month to celebrate the Holy Mass in the Syrian Orthodox tradition in Malayalam, the native language of Kerala. There are sunday school classes after the Holy Mass. Our parish is built upon the devotion and living faith of all its members, who actively partake in the worship and every other spiritual activity of the church. The Leeds St.George Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church is a culmination of dreams of many Christian malayalee families, who left the shore of India in search of job in UK. The success and faith borne growth of this Parish is dedicated to the hundreds of worshippers, who without hesitation worked in solitude and eternal grace to develop the parish, create in it the magma of belief in His Almighty. The parish is under the patronage of His Holiness Moran Mor Ignatius Aphrem II (Prince Patriarch of Antioch & Supreme Head of the universal Syrian Orthodox Church), H.G Issac Mor Osthatheos -Diocesan Bishop (Metropolitan of United Kingdom). You are most welcome to join us to live in Christ.

His Holiness Moran Mor Ignatius Aphrem II (Patriarch of Antioch and all the East)

On March 21, 2014, Patriarch Ignatius Zakka I Iwas demised after a long illness. The Holy Synod of the Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch was convened to elect a successor. The synod was held at St Jacob Baradeus Monastery in Atchaneh, Lebanon, presided over by Mor Baselios Thomas I Catholicos of India and Mor Severius Jamil Hawa Archbishop of Baghdad and Basra and Patriarchal Locum Tenens. The synod elected Cyril Aphrem Karim to be the 123rd successor of St. Peter in the Apostolic See of Antioch. He was enthroned on May 29, 2014, at St Ephrem's Monastery, Maarat Saidnaya, near Damascus, Syria. Baselios Thomas I oversaw the ceremony.Karim took the patriarchal name Ignatius, replacing his episcopal name Cyril, and, being the second patriarch to bear the monastic name Aphrem (the first being Ignatius Aphrem I Barsoum), his name became Ignatius Aphrem II. Unlike his immediate predecessors, but following older convention, Aphrem II chose not to use his family name, Karim, in his official title.
